Italian Paolo della Porta Won the Worldwide Finale of the Entrepreneur of the Year Contest

Brno, Czech Republic - May 20, 2001

Italian entrepreneur Paolo della Porta, who is the chair of the board of directors and the CEO of the SAES Getters technology firm, was the winner of the worldwide Entrepreneur of the Year contest. The first annual international competition for the award, which Ernst & Young has organized for the last 14 years, took place this May in Monte Carlo.

The winner of the "World Entrepreneur of the Year" award, Italian entrepreneur Paolo della Porta, took over SAES Getters, originally a family enterprise, in 1949. SAES Getter deals in getters and gas purification and trace impurity analysis technology. Mr. Porta is the author of a number of patents and scientific articles.

Ernst & Young founded the international Entrepreneur of the Year contest in 1986 in the United States, where it is the most important contest of its type today. The contest gradually expanded into more than 20 other countries of the world, including the world's most industrially advanced countries, such as the USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, and Germany. The founder and main organizer of the contest is Ernst & Young. The project's aim is not to select the most successful manager, banker, or CEO, but rather to acknowledge the work of people who, through their perseverance and courage, played an important role in building up and successfully developing their own firms. The Entrepreneur of the Year contest took place in the Czech Republic for the first time last year. This year, Ernst & Young is organizing the second annual contest in the Czech Republic, the finals for which will take place at the end of September.

An eight-member jury decided on the winner at the world finals of the Entrepreneur of the Year contest. The president of Nasdaq International, John Wall, led the jury in announcing the winner. Other jury members were winners in previous Entrepreneur of the Year contests. The main criteria for the contest were, for example, a company's growth, its business plan, and the performance and behavior of the entrepreneur in question. The jury selected among the 22 winners of the national contests. The Czech Republic was represented by Katerina Forstingerova from Moravia IT, who received the Entrepreneur of the Year award for the Czech Republic last year. Moravia IT provides translations and localization of computer software. Katerina Forstingerova was the first participant in the Entrepreneur of the Year contest from Central and Eastern Europe, and at the same time, she was the first woman to participate in the world finals.

Special awards went to the entrepreneur and Formula-1 legend Eddie Jordan from the Irish company Jordan Grand Prix, and Clive Beddoe, the executive director of the Canadian company WestJet Airlines.

Any entrepreneur who carries full responsibility for the actions of his or her enterprise (under the condition that she or he owns at least 10% of the given firm), or founder of a company with shares on a stock exchange who is still among its top leadership, can take part in the contest. The evaluation criteria include growth of turnover and staff size, as well as factors like the quality of an enterprise's business plan, development of modern technologies, non-traditional marketing and sales approaches, and successful expansion into foreign markets.
